Key takeaways

  • The EU Omnibus Proposal cuts SME sustainability reporting under CSRD and CSDDD but forces large food & beverage companies to boost supply-chain traceability and transparency.

  • With SMEs exempted from CSRD, large companies face ESG data gaps that heighten risks around labor practices, deforestation, and food safety compliance.

  • The Omnibus shifts direct supplier compliance responsibility onto large firms, requiring stricter due-diligence and enhanced compliance tracking systems.

  • Automating compliance with integrated systems that consolidate food safety, sustainability, and quality reduces manual work and improves real-time supply-chain risk and certification visibility.

How the EU Omnibus affects food & beverage companies

The EU Omnibus Proposal has significantly reduced reporting requirements for SMEs under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). While these exemptions ease administrative burdens for businesses, large Food & Beverage companies still face significant compliance responsibilities—requiring greater supply chain traceability and transparency for future operations.

How does the Omnibus Proposal create burdens for large companies?

1. ESG Data Gaps. With SMEs no longer required to report sustainability data under the CSRD, large companies could struggle with a lack of visibility into the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impact of raw material suppliers, farmers, and processing facilities. This creates an increased risks in various areas including, unethical labor practices, deforestation risks and non-compliance with food safety standards.

2. Responsibility shifts to large companies. Despite relaxed reporting requirements for SMEs, large companies remain responsible for ensuring direct supplier compliance under CSDDD. This means businesses must implement stricter supplier due diligence measures and enhance their compliance tracking systems.

3. The Need for a More Strategic Approach to Compliance. Large companies should start seeking a solution that consolidates food safety, product quality, and sustainability compliance into a single, efficient system—reducing manual effort while providing deeper insights across the entire supply chain.

This is how Agriplace integrated solution comes into play
